Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of September 12-14, 2014:

1. Compassion Games
When: Until September 21
Where: Anywhere
Why: There is no cornucopia, no desperate, machete-wielding teens. All you’ve got to do is perform a random act of kindness. Secret agents of compassion get assigned a secret mission for each of the eleven days of the games. You can also pledge to Drive Compassionately, you can nominate someone as a Compassion All Star, and you can Sign up to participate in the CROP Hunger Walk (Sept. 28) and start collecting pledges. Register and then share what you’re doing by using the hashtag #CompassionateBainbridge on social media. Send your reports to info@binkinterfaith.org. The Closing Ceremonies with music and awards will be held at the Bainbridge Island Waterfront Park at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 21.

Paradox2. Paradox
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m., and Saturday, 12-6 p.m.
Where: 8495 Oddfellows Road
Why: Three artists explore paradox in their media. (Hey, didja see the two wharfs walking down the road? Sorry . . .) The artist talk and closing is October 2, from 6-8 p.m.

3. St. Paul de Vence at Grace Church
When: Friday, 6:30 p.m.
Where: Grace Church, 8595 Day Road
Why: Soulful hipster Benjamin Doerr and his band layer melodies and do all kinds of pretty stuff in a gritty, down-to-earth way. Here’s what Don Yates of KEXP says about them: “The band’s dynamic, acoustic-oriented sound includes guitars, accordion, ukulele, autoharp, banjo, mandolin, assorted percussion and more, fleshing out well-crafted songs with warm, soulful harmonies and occasional anthemic choruses.” The opening act is at 7 p.m. and St. Paul de Vence comes on at 8 p.m.

Get tickets here or stop by Grace during office hours.

BI Raffle Quilt4. Bainbridge Quilt Festival
When: Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Where: Downtown Winslow and Bainbridge Island Museum of Art
Why: The town will be blanketed—thank goodness for good weather—with beautiful quilts for your inspection. The Sew In for American Hero Quilts will be happening at BIMA from 10-4. No prior quilting experience is needed. Get a raffle ticket for a chance to win the Raffle Quilt (shown at right). Read more here.

5. Solarize Kitsap Workshop
When: Saturday, 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Where: Seabold Community Center, 14450 Komedal Road
Why: Get paneled and start saving on energy costs. Solarize Kitsap connects you with more affordable solar power. Let the sun shine in.

frogs poster6. Frogs on the Rock Gala Auction
When: Saturday, 5:30 p.m.
Where: Boundy Farm
Why: Support the Bainbridge Island Downtown Association and take home your favorite amphibian. Or buy the frog put your name on it, and donate it to your favorite organization or often-frequented spot downtown where everyone can see it. Read more here. Get your tickets here.

7. Swing and Gypsy Jazz Concert
When: Saturday, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, 550 Winslow Way E
Why: Do these people ever rest? Vocalists Molly Knell, Monica Finney, and Ann Parker join Ranger and the Re-Arrangers for this concert at BIMA, stirring up French ballades, Andrews Sisters hits, and Gypsy jazz.

8. Planetarium Show “Killer Rocks”
When: Saturday, 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m.
Where: Edwin E. Ritchie Observatory and John H. Rudolph Planetarium in the Helix House at Battle Point Park, 11299 Arrow Point Drive NE
Why: The title scares me because I have a good imagination. Astronomer Steve Ruhl gives you a look at asteroids including where they are, what would happen if they came here, and whether Ben Affleck could land on one and nuke it before it blasts Earth to smithereens. If the sky is clear, astronomers will be on hand with telescopes for public solar viewing prior and star-gazing afterward.

$2.

9. Island School Car Wash
When: Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: Chevron, 1220 Hildebrand Lane
Why: Your car has been sporting a layer of grime. Let The Island School Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff scrub your sidewalls for this Annual Fund Drive launch. Donations welcome.

10. Acrylic Techniques Workshop with Fred Lisaius

Why: Lisaius leads you in applying masking techniques and paint with rollers, squeegees, and sponges. He wants you to take chances, make mistakes, and have fun. Open for adult beginner and advanced painters. Materials provided.

$60. Register here.

11. Schel-chelb Watershed Walk
When: Sunday, 2-4 p.m.
Where: Lynwood Community Market Parking lot at the corner of Lynwood Center Road and Point White Drive
Why: Just because you can’t pronounce it doesn’t mean you can’t walk it. This one miler passes the Schel-chelb estuary and Baker Hill Creek. Staffed stations along the way teach you about aquatic life, stormwater runoff, estuary functions, and nonnative plants. Head out any time between 2 and 3:30.
